Technology transfer


As far as technology transfer is concerned, Alex is committed on two fronts. The first relates to collaboration with companies and 🏭industries, the second to 🔨standardization.

Industrial Projects

The collaboration with the companies took place both in the context of the European projects, and through grants financed by the same companies at the UniGe and/or the CNIT with the goal of application and refinement of the most significant research products obtained on commercial equipment and platforms.
The collaborations in question took place with national (™ Ericsson Italy and Alcatel-Lucent Italy) and international (Huawei, Broadcom NetLogic Microsystems, Intel) companies/industrial associations, and concerned the research topics on which Alex actively worked from a scientific point of view.
More specifically, the collaboration with Huawei and with the GeSI had as its objective some aspects concerning energy efficiency in networks and related equipment. The collaboration with ™ Alcatel Lucent had as its object the application and design of scheduling and admission control techniques for the QoS in multiservice networks.
The DWDM-EHC research project is a significant example of synergy between the academic part (UniGe) and the industrial part (Ericsson Italy). In particular, the activities concerned the study and implementation of mechanisms for energy efficiency in transmission units integrated in electro-optical technology for high and hyper-capacity DWDM transmission systems at 400 Gbps and 1 Tbps.

Standardization Activities

With regard to standardization, Alex has contributed and continues to collaborate with both the ITU and the ETSI, in order to define new standards and regulations for more sustainable and EE ICT equipment. In many respects, the standardization activity can be considered as the technology transfer to the industrial world of the concepts and results developed and obtained through participation in scientific research projects such as, in particular, 📈ECONET and GreenNet. The decision to focus technology transfer activities towards standardization, rather than towards the creation of patents, was driven by the need to amplify the dissemination results of research projects as much as possible, and the need to support the creation of new regulations on the energy efficiency and sustainability in the ICT field.
Between 2012 and 2017, Alex actively contributed to the collection and analysis of the data necessary for the drafting of the BB CoC. The goal of this initiative, promoted by the EU, is the definition of guidelines in terms of energy consumption that must be respected by the various companies involved in the construction of network devices.
Alex worked in the ETSI area, where he focused his attention on the work item GALofficially published as ETSI Standard 203 237 of the TC on EE (ETSI-EE).
